Somerset Raritan Valley Sewerage Authority

Forward Thinking

A Forward Thinking Award was presented to the Somerset Raritan Valley Sewerage Authority, in recognition of their quick, cost-effective, and intelligent work to construct a storm control treatment facility in response to localized sanitary sewer overflows. Located in Somerville, this project – the first SSO treatment facility in the state — was created with the goal of providing an innovative, long-term fix to the problem at the lowest cost to local communities. Based on flow monitoring and hydraulic modeling, SRVSA estimated a capital cost of $16.2 million for the 9-mgd facility. Working in partnership with the NJDEP, Kleinfelder, CDM Smith, and through the leadership of its Board of Commissioners, SRVSA avoided litigation and adversarial remediation.
