Environmental Authorities are at the forefront of statewide efforts to ensure a clean and healthful environment. They were created by counties and municipalities to treat water and deliver it to our taps, to collect and treat wastewater from our homes and businesses and return it safely to our water ways and to collect our recyclables and garbage and dispose of them properly. The managers of these utilities joined together to network and learn from each other and to bring quality services to ratepayer customers.
Forty years after this association was created during a meeting in Somerset County, AEA members look forward to a future where local, county and regional authorities continue to meet challenges in a world of ever-increasing demand to conserve natural and public resources and provide services at the lowest rates to customers.
This web site will identify the authorities in your county and connect you to their web sites. You will find information on water treatment and water quality issues. Authority managers invite you to learn more about how these services are delivered. It takes the skills and talents of many people working together to provide these water and solid waste management services that make life in our communities pleasant, comfortable and safe. Authority employees must meet strict professional licensing standards in order to operate the facilities, laboratories and energy equipment. The financing and contracting personnel must also be certified. Authorities must carefully select engineering and contracting specialists to work on the facilities. With our nation now on terrorist alert, managers must secure the chemicals and facility from intruders and train all the authority employees in emergency management protocols. The employees are first responders right after police and firefighters. Sanitation and drinking water must be restored immediately after any natural or manmade disaster.
The facilities function 24-7 for your benefit. This means authority staff work on holidays and weekends and around the clock. They are skilled and dedicated members of your community who have a vested interest in high quality service.
